Of course, there’s also Zendaya’s central performance - which rightfully earned her an Emmy. While they may complain that show creator Sam Levinson’s filmmaking is gratuitous, salacious, and self-indulgent, their views of every episode still count in the long-run. But it’s also had the added benefit of being the series many adults tune in to purely to hate. The show’s blend of dangerous behavior and dreamy visuals has made it a success in that regard. After all, while shows like Succession and The White Lotus appealed to HBO’s usual crowd of tasteful aesthetes, Euphoria was specifically designed to attract a younger crowd - namely, Gen-Zers, who are more likely to spend an hour scrolling through their endless TikTok feeds than to plop down on the couch for sixty minutes to watch an uninterrupted serial drama. Of course, people should not be surprised about these impressive numbers. According to the cable network, all eight episodes of the first season landed in the top 10 of HBO Max’s most popular series on Sunday night. And though the two-and-a-half year gap between seasons was more circumstantial than deliberate, it proved beneficial, as the extended wait for new episodes pushed many people ( myself included) to revisit season one ahead of the new installments. Which, yes, means the Euphoria premiere netted a stronger viewership than the widely-talked-about finales for water-cooler dramas like The White Lotus, The Undoing, Mare of Easttown, and, perhaps most shocking, Succession season three.Īs a further testament to Euphoria’s appeal, HBO added that the show’s second season premiere debuted with nine times more digital viewers than its first season premiere. As reported by HBO, this is the strongest digital premiere of any episode on their streaming service since it launched way back in May 2020. ![]() (Just ask all those impatient fans angrily tweeting about how the HBO Max app crashed at 9:00pm on the dot.)Īccording to Deadline, this weekend’s premiere drew in a whopping 2.4 million viewers across all platforms, making it HBO Max’s first-ranked title on Sunday night. A Scorsesian fever-dream set at a typically-unhinged New Year’s Eve bash, the long-awaited premiere was a satisfactory return to the glossy world of these twisted teens - and, as it turns out, a lot of people agreed. After building its extremely committed fanbase over two months in the summer of 2019, the HBO drama, about a struggling drug addict and her slightly-less fucked-up classmates at a suburban high school, finally returned for its pandemic-delayed second season this Sunday - almost two-and-a-half years after airing its season one finale. We wonder when we'll meet Nate and Aaron's brother.Whether or not you support its sordid stories about teens-gone-wild, one thing is for certain: Euphoria is very, very, very popular. Wait, you don't recall this? Remember that framed photo that Cal took before he left? The one that showed the Jacobs parents and three boys. The reveal third Jacobs brother is also in the wind. There's also Rue's debt to Laurie, as well as the question of who or what is locked in Laurie's house. Will that flash drive also show Jules and Cal? The Jacobs family is also likely in a permanently destroyed state after Nate called the cops on his dad. ![]() ![]() As will the seemingly glowingly positive reception of Lexi's play, except for that whole part where Maddy slammed Cassie's face into the brick wall (though it looks like she only got a bloody nose for her troubles). ![]() In terms of the aftermath of the season 2 finale, Fezco's (likely) arrest and Ashtray's (definite) death will likely have heavy ramifications going forward. Was it permanently scarred by Rue's breakdown during the worst intervention ever? Jules' attempt at a reconciliation in the season 2 finale seemed to have worked slightly, but not as much as she'd hoped. Kat Hernandez Barbie Ferreira Chris McKay Algee Smith Fezco Angus Cloud Behind the Scenes of Season 2 6:00 Music of Euphoria Zendaya leads an ensemble cast that also includes Maude Apatow, Angus Cloud, Eric Dane, Alexa Demie, Jacob Elordi, Barbie Ferreira, Nika King, Storm Reid, Hunter Schafer, Algee Smith and Sydney Sweeney. The big overarching plot that doesn't seem to have any resolution coming soon is Rue and Jules' relationship. Once a focal point of the series, Kat's barely been on screen at all. The only big question we have, though, is will we get more of Hunter Schafer and Barbie Ferreira next season? Jules seemingly got pushed out of focus the second Rue started kicking in doors, and as for Kat? Well, you don't have to have read The Daily Beast's expose about the drama behind the scenes to have reason to think something was up with Ferreira. That is except, of course, Javon Walton likely won't be back to portray Ashtray, as the cops gunned him down in the bathroom (after he shot Fezco and many cops). At this point, we have to assume that the main cast will be back in Euphoria season 3.
